I recently picked up a pair of Monster Lil’ Jamz headphones while traveling as my usual set broke during one leg of my flight. The last pair of in-ear headphones I owned were the Shure EC5 model, which were nothing short of amazing, so I figured I’d go for another pair of the in-ear design, only this time I didn’t want to spend as much (or even close to it). I reviewed the selection at the store, asked the clerk about the feedback they’d received on the different models they offered for sale, and decided on the Lil’ Jamz. I paid and was on my way to the hotel in no time.
When I got to the hotel I realized that the little sleeve on the jack wasn’t attached as one would expect it to be. Upon inspection I could see that it had in fact been glued in place originally, but had come loose. I used the headphones a few times during the week while I was travelling and that loose piece was a challenge to keep in my posession. I decided that I would hit the store on my way out of town to exchange them for another pair.
The return process went as smoothly as one might expect, and I was on my way again. I was home for a week between trips and I used the headphones only once during that time. I’m on the road again now, and I’ve been using the headphones in my hotel room while seated in front of a small desk for hours on end while I catch up on work. As of today, I discovered that the little sleeve on this pair is now also not attached to the jack assembly. This is some fantastic build quality, let me tell you!
Ok onto the actual review…
Sound Quality -
I’d rate these a 7. The frequency response is flat and natural but the sound quality falls apart a bit at the extreme ends of the spectrum, i.e. bass and treble, at higher volumes.
Build Quality -
I’m not a fan so far. Maybe I got the only two bum units out there, but two in a row seems strange. I haven’t abused these at all, there’s no reason for them to be coming apart like this other than bad design.
Aesthetic Appeal-
I think these look great, not that this should matter with headphones. They’re small and stylish and unobtrusive. I’ve seen a lot of in-ear headphones that look more like medical devices than entertainment gadgets.
The Verdict-
It doesn’t matter how they sound if they’re going to fall apart within 2 weeks of purchase. Twice. If I had it to do over again I’d buy a different brand/model.
